Guide for Supplying Files

Don’t be concerned if you don’t understand all the jargon and specifications. We will talk to you in plain English.

What file format is required for the job to be printed?

We can handle all professionally produced PDF files prepared by you or your designer to print your creation.

Some programs are not suited to quality printing, in this case we use can your layout as a guide. Let us know the program you have used and we will advise you from that point.

We work from high resolution PDF files prepared to industry specifications for best results.

If you cannot supply a PDF file contact us about options.

Can my artwork be created for me?

Yes, we will do it here, or point you in the right direction.

If creating your own artwork or placing it with a third party/graphic designer, please make sure they are using an industry standard mainstream package that can produce the necessary high resolution PDF file for printing.

SOME TIPS, CONSIDERATIONS, TERMS & CONDITIONS

Software that should be used?

Any professional package that can create the necessary high resolution 300dpi CMYK PDF print ready file with all fonts embedded.

Photos need to be scanned to at least 300dpi in CMYK colour on a quality scanner for best results.

Avoid screen (computer monitor) resolution images and images copied from the internet.

Bleed is the area of a printed job that will be trimmed off. Orders are printed on a sheet larger than the finished size will be. Bleed is used where images or colour prints off the edge of the sheet.

Orders need to have 3mm of bleed, so a document ends up larger by 6mm in each direction.

The margin is the opposite direction. Keep all ‘live’ material in from edge by about 8mm (being 5mm margin and 3mm of bleed). This will depend on the actual job size eg: margins on a business card will be less than a poster.

We’ve been doing this since 1985, so we know all the shortcuts that save you time and money.

If starting a larger project such as a booklet or magazine, it may be useful to get some advice even before starting, in order to avoid reworking later.

Proofing

Typically proofs are sent by email. These will be low resolution for speedy transmission.
